Romantic
Picnics from the Picnic Professor
There isn’t quite anything like a private picnic with that special
someone with a picnic basket full of wine and fresh food. However,
planning the perfect romantic picnic takes a little more preparation
than simply making some sandwiches.
Any good romantic picnic, and any picnic for that matter, requires
a few important items: proper food, the right location, supplies and,
of course, the right bottle of wine. By following a few simple steps,
you can make sure you and that special someone enjoy a fun, carefree
and tasteful romantic picnic.

Any good romantic picnic, and any picnic for that matter, requires
a few important items: proper food, the right location, supplies and,
of course, the right bottle of wine. By following a few simple steps,
you can make sure you and that special someone enjoy a fun, carefree
and tasteful romantic picnic.
Picnic Food
The most important part of any romantic picnic is the food. Make sure
to stock your picnic
basket with food items that will not spoil easily and are not
messy. Good examples of romantic picnic foods include cold chicken
and beef sandwiches and fruit dishes. Some other dishes don’t
work so well for a romantic picnic. Chicken salad and shredded beef,
for example, are much messier dishes and not as easy to serve or store.
Apples, grapes, oranges and other fruits make great additions to your
romantic picnic. Stay away from salads, mayonnaise and other dishes
that may spoil easy and spoil your fun as well. It’s best to
pack an instant red meet thermometer to monitor food temperature and
to remember that perishable foods should not be left out for more
than two hours.
Wine
Wine sets the mood for a romantic picnic and choosing the right type
of wine to put in your picnic basket can be important. A light Chablis
or Chardonnay is a nice wine to sip and enjoy over a light meal or
conversation. A picnic basket for two is a great and obvious touch for any romantic picnic.
The Somerset Gardens, Doppio Vino and Hampshire Commons (LINKS) picnic
baskets are great examples of form meeting function.
Bringing soda, sparkling water and Champagne in your picnic basket
is essential. Whatever the occasion, make the drink match your food.
Red and white wines are distinct from each other in two main ways:
tannins and flavors. Tannins cause the dry and puckery feeling in
the mouth after drinking red wine, strong tea or unripened fruit.
Red wines have tannins and few white wines do. Red and white wines
share some flavors. Both can be spicy, buttery and floral but the
light apple, pear and citrus flavors in many white wines seldom occur
in red wines. Conversely, many of the cherry and stone fruit flavors
of red wines usually don’t appear in white wines.
The flavor differences between red and white wines are what make wine-and-food
matching critical. To match wine with food, it’s important to
know where they fit in the spectrum of size and weight. The lightest
wines are at one end and the full-bodied wines are at the other.
A simple rule of thumb is that hearty foods need a hearty wine. Red
wines in your picnic basket generally go very nicely with heavier
foods such as beef and red pasta. Lighter wines, on the other hand,
give you a bit more of a choice with food selection. Some examples
of red wine pairings are Pinot Noir, Merlot, Cabernet and Zinfandel
for beef, strong cheese and pasta with red sauce. Pork goes nicely
with Pinot Noir and Beaujolais. Chocolate mixes well with Merlot,
Cabernet and Port.
White wines go best with lighter foods and mild cheeses, as well as
seafood. Some examples of good white wine and food pairings include
Chenin Blanc, Dry Riesling and Sauvignon Blanc with shrimp, crab and
lobster. Sauvignon Blanc also goes well with pasta with cream sauce.
Picnic Recipes
It’s not always easy to decide on food items to put in you picnic
basket for a romantic dinner. However, there are a few easy recipes
that can make for a great time.
Mussels Vinaigrette
- 2 lbs mussels
- 1/2 C olive oil
- 3 T red wine vinegar
- 2 tsp. Dijon mustard
- 2 shallots, finely chopped
- 3 T parsley, finely chopped
- 2 T capers
- Salt and pepper to taste
Serves 4 to 6 as an appetizer
After cleaning mussels, place in a large pot with a tightly
fitting lid and do not add any liquid or seasoning. Cover the pot
and cook over high heat for 5 to 6 minutes, shaking the pot occasionally.
Remove from the heat and allow to cool enough for you to handle
the mussels. Remove the shells, and discard the shells as well as
any mussels that did not open.
Whisk together the oil, vinegar, mustard, salt, and pepper. Add
the mussels and the remaining ingredients, stirring gently to combine.
Refrigerate for at least 1 hour, or until ready to serve. Serve
on a bed of lettuce leaves, garnish with additional parsley and
lemon slices.
Puff Pastry Cheese Twists
- 1 sheet frozen puff pastry, 1/2 (17.3-ounce) package
- 1/3 cup grated Parmesan
- 2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil
- 2 teaspoons minced garlic
- 1 teaspoon dried oregano
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon cayenne
- 1 large egg
- All-purpose flour, for dusting
Preheat oven to 400 degrees F. Line 3 large baking sheets with
parchment paper. Thaw the pastry sheet at room temperature covered
by a clean kitchen cloth, about 30 minutes. While the pastry is
thawing, combine cheese, olive oil, garlic, oregano, salt and cayenne
in a small mixing bowl. Stir well to combine. In a clean small mixing
bowl, beat the egg with a fork. On a lightly floured surface, gently
unfold the pastry.
Sprinkle the pastry lightly with flour and using a rolling pin,
roll into a 14 by 10-inch rectangle. Brush the top of the pastry
with a beaten egg. Cut in 1/2 lengthwise to form 2 (7 by 10-inch)
rectangles. Spread the herb-cheese mixture with the back of a spoon
evenly across 1 rectangle. Lay the second rectangle across the coated
piece, egg side-down. With the rolling pin lightly roll the 2 sheets
together to seal. With a large knife cut crosswise into strips,
about 1/3-inch wide each. (Alternately, you can use a pizza wheel
to cut the strips.) One at a time, grab the ends of each strip and
twist in opposite directions to form a spiral. Transfer to the prepared
baking sheets. Bake until light golden brown, about 10 minutes.
Remove from the oven and let cool on baking sheets until cool enough
to handle. Serve either warm or at room temperature.
Greek Orzo and Grilled Shrimp Salad with Mustard-Dill Vinaigrette
- 3/4 pound orzo, cooked al dente
- 1 large cucumber, seeded, quartered lengthwise, and sliced
- 3 green onions, thinly sliced
- 1 pint grape tomatoes, halved
- 1/4 cup chopped fresh dill, plus extra for garnish
- 1/4 cup white wine vinegar
- 3 tablespoons Dijon mustard
- 1/2 cup olive oil, plus additional for brushing shrimp
- Salt and freshly ground pepper
- 3/4 pound feta cheese, crumbled
- 16 medium shrimp, peeled and de-veined
Combine orzo, cucumber, green onions, and tomatoes in a large bowl.
Place dill, vinegar, and mustard in a blender and blend until smooth.
With the motor running, slowly add the olive oil and blend until
emulsified. Season with salt and pepper, to taste. Pour the vinaigrette
over the orzo mixture and stir well to combine. Gently fold in the
feta cheese.
Heat grill to high. Brush shrimp with oil and season with salt and
pepper. Grill for approximately 2 minutes per side or until just
cooked through. Divide orzo salad among 4 take-out containers or
plates and top with 4 shrimp. Garnish with additional dill.
Location
Parks are obvious choices for a romantic picnic, but you can always
be a little creative when choosing where to have a private meal.
Bring your picnic basket anywhere that you feel comfortable and
safe. Beaches work well. Your own backyard can even be a perfect
spot to place your picnic basket.
Accessories
Don’t forget to bring paper towels in your picnic basket.
Most Picnicbasket.com baskets come prepackaged with styled napkins.
It’s also a good idea to put dry towels and a wet washcloth
on your list. Stick the wet washcloth in a zip-type plastic bag
and place it in your picnic basket.
Ants can easily ruin a romantic picnic; however, there is an easy
way to keep them at bay. Ants won’t cross a circle of talcum
powder around the edges of your plates due to the smell and texture,
which are repellant to them.
Games, books and puzzles can add to a romantic picnic and fit easily
in your picnic basket. Add to the relaxing atmosphere by trying
your hand at badminton or croquet.
Also, it’s a good idea to bring along sun screen and a small
first aid kit in your picnic basket.
